It seems a lot of kendama players think grippy/sticky kendamas are cheating. I say it's no different than bearings in a yoyo. Who says shit has to be as hard as possible for it to be a skillful endeavor?

I think grip is okay to use but a trick is just that much more impressive when done on a non-grippy tama.

I think it is fine. If you learn a hard trick that you wouldn't have been able to do with a regular tama, now you know how to do it, and it will ease the learning curve for doing it on a kendama with non-sticky paint.
